Home Guides & Tips Why I Can’t Sleep: Signs, Causes, and Simple Remedies

One of the many things men take for granted is sleep. We get it for free, but with all the responsibilities lined up like dominoes, it’s almost impossible to catch a break. The thing is, sleep is one of the key players in maintaining good health; it helps support healthy brain function, allowing us to think clearly and function normally.

On random Tuesdays, we just end up searching “Why I can’t sleep,” but instead of getting answers, we just end up somewhere else, like TikTok or Facebook, causing us to lose more sleep.

Why does this happen? Let’s jump down the rabbit hole on the signs, causes, and simple remedies that could help us get those seven hours of sleep daily.

Why is sleep important?

The amount of sleep we need completely varies depending on our age, but if you’re an adult, you need seven to nine hours of sleep. It is the reward we could offer our body and brain to restart its function. Think of it as your phone needing to be recharged after being used the whole day. When we sleep, our body gets to store and conserve energy, which serves as our fuel the next day.

Moreover, this function also aids in activating our body’s self-repairing mechanism; it’s the reason why we feel more tired when we’re running a fever or having the flu.

Signs of Sleep Deprivation

No one could survive without sleep. Despite having the longest record of 453 hours and 40 minutes of not having any sleep, it’s impossible to function normally with this kind of deprivation. Research shows that within three to four days of lacking a good night’s rest, a person could possibly start experiencing hallucinations.

The following are the signs that may indicate someone is experiencing sleep deprivation:

  • Tiredness that doesn’t go away. Despite doing fewer activities than usual, you still feel tired.
  • Difficulty keeping your focus. Moments wherein you’re certain you’ve done something a hundred times already, but you can’t seem to keep your attention on it.
  • Mood changes. Oftentimes, people experiencing sleep deprivation could experience irritability, anxiety, and depression. We often find ourselves getting worked up at night and even consistently listing reasons “Why I can’t sleep…” but still end up getting little to no solution for it.
  • Physical symptoms. Getting little sleep could lead to headaches and illnesses such as the flu and fever.

Why I can’t sleep

While studies show that women are more prone to sleep deprivation than men, it’s still important to explore what causes them, which include the following:

  • Cluelessness. It may seem like a joke the first time you read it, but the reality is that men take pride whenever they feel tired and refuse to take a rest since it’s a sign that they’re working hard. It’s a common misconception that needs attention because lack of sleep shouldn’t be a measure of productivity.
  • Medical & Biological. A condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is more common in men than women. This causes a person to stop breathing abruptly while sleeping, which leads to sleep disturbances. Research shows that men are two to three times more likely to develop it, largely due to differences in airway anatomy and hormonal makeup.
  • Mental Health. Men are less likely to talk about or seek help for stress, anxiety, and depression, and all three are notorious sleep wreckers. The pressure to tough it out often means these struggles go unaddressed, quietly showing up as insomnia or restless nights instead.
  • Lifestyle & Behavioral. Late nights, alcohol, irregular sleep schedules, too much screen time before bed— men tend to check a lot of the boxes when it comes to habits that hurt sleep. Add in a general reluctance to stick to a nighttime routine, and it’s easy to see why poor sleep becomes a pattern.

How to get more sleep

There are several ways to fix one’s sleep schedule to get more sleep. This includes the following:

  • Have a consistent sleep schedule. This trick is simple: just pick a specific time when you sleep at night and when you wake up in the morning. Assuming you’ll sleep at 10 PM and wake up at 6 AM, stick to this schedule even during weekends.
  • No naps after 3 PM. Fight the urge to sleep; keep yourself distracted.
  • Avoid caffeine before bedtime. Don’t consume your favorite coffee or tea six hours before going to bed.
  • Have a comfortable environment. One of the objectives is to find a relaxing space. Play some white noise or anything you find comforting, dim out the lights, and keep the room not too warm or too cool.
  • Aerobic exercise. Working out a bit, one to two hours before sleeping, can release “feel-good” neurotransmitters known as Endorphins. Once they’re released, their levels also decrease during the one to two-hour window, allowing you to get some sleep.
  • Taking nutritional supplements. Supplements like Zeman SX could aid in enhancing sleep due to their magnesium and zinc content. Magnesium is capable of maintaining the balance in the brain’s chemical messengers, helping you relax. It also helps in producing melatonin, which helps regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycle.

You’ve read this far. Now close the tab and go to sleep.

The choice is yours. You have a handful of options right in front of you— may it be using organic methods, taking supplements, or clustering them in one regimen. If you plan on giving natural supplements like Zeman SX, you can find them at any of the following stores online or onsite:

Nonetheless, know that despite following regimens, the foolproof key to getting that seven to nine hours of rest is consistency and discipline. No matter how many techniques we try out and how many searches we do asking “Why I can’t sleep at night” the solution won’t magically appear.
